| Rio Tinto's Stern Hu gets 10-year sentence |
The Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court has sentenced four employees of world's mining giant Rio Tinto to jail terms ranging from 7 to 14 years on taking bribes and meddling commercial secrets.
The court said Monday afternoon that Australian national Stern Hu and three Chinese co-workers were guilty of charges of bribery and stealing business secrets.
Hu was given seven years on the bribery charges and five years on the commercial secrets charges, but will serve 10 years in total, read a court statement.
Rio Chinese employee Wang Yong is given 14 years in prison, while Ge Minqiang gets eight years, and Liu Caikui gets seven years. All their illegal bribery incomes were confiscated by the court.
The verdict comes as multinational companies like Rio Tinto and German luxury car-maker Daimler are facing increasingly strict oversight into their business dealings worldwide, as both developed and developing countries tighten enforcement of anti-corruption rules.
Stern Hu, an Australian executive of Rio Tinto, and his three Chinese co-workers pleaded guilty to charges of taking bribes in a three-day trial held last week. Their pleas on commercial espionage charges were unknown as those hearings were closed |
